For headache & migraine sufferers –
“I’m at my wits’ end!”
Headache and migraine conditions are some of the most common pain complaints experienced by humans. However, they are still some of the least understood.
Sufferers of headache and migraine who are looking for a solution to manage or cure their pain, quite often come to a dead-end. That’s because headache and migraine (as explained in this article) is a complex condition.
All too often, we see patients whose symptoms “don’t fit the typical picture” of a certain headache type. Sometimes it feels like a tension headache, other times it’s a migraine, other times it is both! This is because the medical model of diagnosing headaches and migraines is purely symptom based, not cause-based.
That’s why at The Headache and Pain Management Centre, our methods of diagnosing and treating headache and migraine are very different to other clinicians and specialists.
A better way of diagnosing your headache or migraine
At The Headache and Pain Management Centre we offer a far more complete picture. In short, new research shows that headache and migraine conditions are a continuum, not individually separate conditions. To simplify this concept, let’s use an example of a similar condition.
A person with lower back pain with nerve root compression on MRI (sometimes called “sciatica”), may have symptoms locally in their back, numbness in their leg or foot, pain down the hip, leg or foot, or none of them, or all of them! All of these differing pains can be caused by the same source: the nerve root compression.
In the same way, a disturbance in the upper cervical spine (the top of your neck) can cause a headache, migraine, neck pain, tight shoulders, cluster headache, jaw pain, ear pain, sinus pain… you can see where we’re heading.
A better way of treating your headache or migraine
It’s all too common for headache or migraine sufferers to have negative experiences with medications, clinicians and hospitals. Because of the lack of an identified cause, it is really difficult to prescribe the best treatment. Stories have been told to us where medications are trialled and awful side-effects have happened, where they are simply not effective – or if they are, it can be a life sentence (“you need to take this for the rest of your life”).
Experiences with other health professionals can also be daunting for the headache and migraine sufferer. Often patients tell us that they feel their “doctor doesn’t understand”, that “people say I am making all this up”, or that the scans are clear and hence nothing can be done about it.
It’s understandable that headache or migraine sufferers may not want to seek any more help!
